Observational Drawing Class II (age 10 and up) 观察绘画 II (Age 10 and up)
(DW03B_17F)

*Destroy the symbol system! *Express yourself! *Did you know that learning to draw is actually learning to SEE?!! “The goal in drawing is to encounter the reality of experience--to see ever more clearly, ever more deeply.”-Betty Edwards, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain I believe drawing teaches habits of close observation that will always be useful. When we draw from life we look intently at our subject and explore many ways of making marks that describe our perceptions and experience of the physical world. In this class students will be introduced to classic and time honored exercises such as blind contour drawing, in which they will be encouraged to make mistakes and learn to take it slow and easy, by focusing on SEEing what it is they are looking at (without naming or labeling) rather than trying to render a realistic representation of their subject. We will be taking a fresh, direct look at our subjects to explore form, structure and perspective with line. The aim of this class is to ignite a love of looking and to inspire students to see the world around them in a new and exciting way. Individual attention will be emphasized. All ages welcome. *Materials needed: pencils and inexpensive paper. *Suggested reading material: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Betty Edwards. The Natural Way to Draw, Kimon Nicolaides. ***“Art should be concerned more with life than with art. When we use numbers we are using symbols, and it is only when we transfer them to life that they become actualities. The same is true with rules of drawing. They are to be learned, not as rules but as actualities. Then the rules become appropriate.” -Kimon Nicolaides, The Natural Way to Draw. Instructor: Marcia Camp has a profound love for drawing and is delighted to share her enthusiasm for the art of seeing. She is currently working to complete the Master of Fine Arts program at Fontbonne University where she has had the opportunity to study under, and assist in teaching, internationally renowned artist Victor Wang. She has participated in multiple group and solo exhibits in St. Louis and Illinois as both a student and professional.
